Australian Treasurer Opens Pre-Budget Consultations

by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

19 December 2012

Australian Treasurer Wayne Swan has launched the consultation process for his forthcoming 2013-14 Budget, inviting submissions detailing ideas and priorities.

Swan received over 270 submissions for this year's Budget, which he says gave him "a really valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities facing individuals, businesses and other groups from right across our community." The views contained in the submissions "are a vital part of the development of government policies," he added.

Swan also hinted at his own priorities for the Budget, stressing that the government will continue to build on its record of budget discipline. AUD16bn (USD16.9bn) in savings were identified in the mid-year budget update, and the aim is to secure a return to surplus.

Submissions should consider the government's commitment to responsible budget management and the need to offset any proposed spending with equivalent savings. Submissions must be received by January 31, 2013.
