Australia Supports IMO Technical Assistance Programme

Australia's Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) committing it to provide significant assistance to authorities in developing nations to aid them in implementing maritime policies that meet international best standards.

Under the MoU, signed on June 11, 2012, the AMSA will provide experts and hostship facilities for the delivery of programmes under the IMO's Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP). The Programme provides expert advice to local authorities on the sustainable development of their maritime industries, covering three topics: improving the safety, security and efficiency of maritime activities; enhancing marine environment protection; and promoting sustainable livelihoods and poverty eradication for industry workers.

AMSA has a long history of engagement in technical capacity-building, particularly in the Asia and Pacific Region, and actively supports partnerships in the international maritime community to transfer skills and knowledge. Australia is also a significant participant in the IMO’s Technical Co-operation Committee.

The IMO’s technical co-operation programme began in the 1960s. The ITCP Programme was launched in the late 1990s as part of IMO efforts to improve the efficacy of its assistance efforts particularly for developing nations. In its 2010-2015 strategic plan, the IMO underscored the importance of building partnerships with governments, organizations and the industry, to ensure the long-term sustainability of the ITCP initiative.
