Asia-Pac To Witness Aviation Sector Boom: IATA

Aviation sector policymakers in the Asia-Pacific region must enhance safety, help airlines cut costs, and tackle environmental issues over the next 20 years to support the development of the industry, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has said.

Speaking in Tokyo, IATA's Director-General, Tony Tyler, explained that global air travel is predicted to more than double by 2034, rising to 6.1 billion flights a year. IATA expects that by 2034 nearly half of all air travel will touch the Asia-Pacific region, up from around 40 percent today.

IATA said that keeping pace with expected growth will be a challenge for infrastructure. This is being addressed with some USD3bn earmarked for improvements in air traffic capacity and management. Concluding, Tyler encouraged governments in the region to ensure that there is sufficient oversight of private sector infrastructure development projects to ensure good value for money and to ensure high safety standards are maintained, stating that airports should be viewed as "public utilities, not hedge fund investments."

IATA said it is working closely with Chinese authorities to ease airspace congestion. It also voiced support for the redesign of airspace at Tokyo's Haneda Airport, which will increase capacity. IATA said Japan's plans take into consideration that modern aircraft are some 70 percent quieter than those of the early jet age.
