Airbus Made Environmental Ambassador

by Mike Godfrey,, Washington

12 September 2011

Aircraft manufacturing giant Airbus has become an ambassador of the newly-founded “Global Restoration Council and Coalition”, led by Göran Persson, the former prime minister of Sweden. The body aims at repairing the environmental damage caused by economic activity, including by the aviation industry.

The council was launched at the international reforestation summit “Bonn Challenge” held at the beginning of September with the objective of reforesting 15% of the degraded forests worldwide by 2020.

Airbus’s involvement is part of its long standing commitment to the goals of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to enhance international awareness on the need to protect the environment and its biodiversity. In its role as ambassador, Airbus will approach its airline customers to gain their support for the council and enlarge its publicity.

Airbus said it strives to constantly improve the eco-efficiency of aviation and is investing USD2bn in innovative new technologies.

“It is clear that the 70% reduction in aircraft emissions and the 75% reduction in noise achieved over the last 40 years are just the beginning. Airbus stands firmly – and actively - behind the IATA targets of achieving carbon neutral growth for the industry by 2020 and a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050”, Günter Butschek, Airbus Executive Vice President, Operations, told the summit in Bonn.

In order to achieve these ambitious targets, Airbus says that it is pushing for the development and integration of new technologies and materials. The firm is also leading international projects to improve air traffic management to reduce emissions and noise and is actively driving the implementation of sustainable biofuel value chains all over the world.

Besides these technical activities Airbus also supports environmental projects, and has been working with the CBD since 2008 to promote “The Green Wave” initiative, which educates young people about biodiversity. The Airbus Corporate Foundation also supports biodiversity projects in Europe, China, Japan, the US and India.
