Airbnb To Double French Tourist Tax Payments

Online property rental platform Airbnb has said that it will pay around EUR13.5m (USD16.7m) in tourist taxes to cities across France for 2017 – double what it paid last year.

Airbnb said that it is expanding its automatic tourist tax collection and remittance system on bookings made through its website this year to 15,000 municipalities. In doing so, it becomes the first such accommodation platform to "contribute heavily to the finances of local authorities," it said.

According to the company, Paris stands to collect the highest amount of tourist tax from Airbnb, at EUR6.9m for 2017, followed by Nice (EUR860,000), and Marseille (EUR790,000). More than EUR550,000 was remitted to localities home to Alpine ski resorts, the firm said.

Nice saw the largest increase in tax collected though Airbnb year-on-year, of 332 percent, next followed by Nantes and Cannes, which saw increases of 264 percent and 202 percent, respectively.

Last year, Airbnb said that by May 1, 2017, the company would have entered into tax agreements with over 275 jurisdictions around the world, by which time it would have collected and remitted over USD240m in tourist and occupancy taxes.
