Scotland Should Have Tax Committee, Says CIOT

The Scottish government's apparent inability to grow the Scottish economy out of the slump caused by the decline in the North Sea oil sector is because of the SNP / Tory Fiscal Framework Agreement which prevents the Scottish government borrowing £ billions a year more to budget for increased investment and / or tax cuts.

That bad fiscal framework was stitched up between First Minister Sturgeon and Chancellor Osborne in February 2016.

Ever since then the bad fiscal framework has imposed tough spending cuts / tax rise choices on Scottish budgets.

A new fiscal framework is required to grow the Scottish economy, end austerity and bring prosperity to the people.

I've been explaining that ever since but politicians and media are turning a blind eye and a deaf ear to my good advice.

Instead of listening and understanding, politicians have told bare-faced lies, blaming each other for economic stagnation in Scotland spuriously attributed to side issues such as "indy ref 2" or "Brexit".

We must hold dishonest politicians accountable, presenting as proof of their economic incompetence their foolish agreement with the bad fiscal framework in the first place.

Suitably chastised by Scottish economists and repentant, the Scottish Parliament and government should demand a new and better fiscal framework, with its borrowing powers capped at no less than 8% of Scottish GDP, able to borrow up to an additional £10 billion per year, from the central bank, interest free and with no expectation of repayments, the borrowed amounts simply being accounted for as "Scotland's national debt" and effectively written off.

US Congress Receives Flexible, Tax-Free Savings Bill

I am concerned that you compare retirement accounts to general savings accounts. Everyone should have IRAs or other accounts only for retirement.

Since people have a hard enough time with regular savings (not doing it), you would not be helping them.

US Congress Receives Flexible, Tax-Free Savings Bill

The savings issue is not addressed until the Fed. Gov. removes the requirement to tax USA citizens' twice and ongoing for monies earned and for interests gained in any savings vehicle.

Only $5,500? Why bother with a piggy bank? It's probably fine for young folks but doesn't do much for seniors who may not have many years to "grow" savings.

US Congress Receives Flexible, Tax-Free Savings Bill

GREAT, but why limit this to just $5,500? We are savers and get penalized with paying taxes on the interest we get from our savings. If able, try to include a catch up provision.
By Bryan Butler on Thursday, February 23, 2017

US Congress Receives Flexible, Tax-Free Savings Bill

Of course it would be a good idea but the government would probably find a way to screw us out of the money anyway. Almost 50 years ago when I got my first job I begged to not be forced to pay into social security but into another account. I was pretty sure the government would not use the money wisely....I was correct. The lock box has a big hole in it.

US Congress Receives Flexible, Tax-Free Savings Bill

Of course I love the idea of sheltering earnings from taxes without a time restriction, but Senator Flake's statement is misleading. The tax code does not penalize savers for accessing their initial contribution. Only the subsequent earnings or profits are taxed. Politicians should not mislead the public in this way!

US Congress Receives Flexible, Tax-Free Savings Bill

Very good intentions, yet it creates another account type and more tax language. How about increasing the eligibility and limits allowed for existing Roth IRA accounts. Simultaneously removing the restrictions for qualified withdrawals. This would lead to a reduction in the tax language around savings vehicles, and achieve the same goals. Keep the good savings ideas coming.

US Congress Receives Flexible, Tax-Free Savings Bill

What kind of savings? Are you investing or just getting a crappy less than 1% return? No taxes on the money earned? Or no taxes on the deposits? Sounds stupid.
By Cherie Randall on Wednesday, February 22, 2017

US Congress Receives Flexible, Tax-Free Savings Bill

Depending on the details, it sounds like a good idea. People need to save. The current system gives people an incentive to save for retirement, but too many find they have to use those funds for other things when they have unforseen events often resulting in huge penalties as well as taxes.

Dijsselbloem Warns UK Against 'Going Rogue' On Tax

Dijsselbloem, a socialist, equally threatening a nation which has decided to get out of that monstrum called EU. The EU centre in Brussel, with its autocrats, only know the language of intimidation (above all Juncker, Schulz), used to its member states. Kindness and leniency are unknown in their vocabulary and their behavior.

Seychelles Needs To Boost Revenue: IMF

Any government that adopts a policy of overtaxing small and vunerable businesses is ill advised and doesn't last long in power. In 2016, the minister of finance blew a massive hole in the budget with the SONA initiatives. For IMF to now endorse these measures which are counterproductive to economic growth puts their credibility in doubt and begs the question - why?

UK Urged To Delay Making Tax Digital Plans

My main criticism of the system is that since they upgraded the security for logging into your personal tax account to include sending a code to a mobile phone. I live in Thailand and the system does not send SMS to my Thai number. To get around this I have provided my son's number in the UK. Before I can login to my tax account I have to contact my son and when he is available to do so he sends the code via Messenger to allow me to gain access to my account. I ask where is the security improvement in that one? It also makes it quite onerous having to login a couple of times a year let alone maybe having to login every quarter or more just to check everything is OK!

UK Consults On 'Soft Drinks Industry Levy'

All primary schools should only give milk or orange drinks controlled by Government with little or sugar in the product. Sort drinks sold should have no sugar just a proportion o glucose with non-sugar flavoring like in old days. Sugar sold in bags should be rationed to 1kg bags per fortnight, and removal of sugar from can stuffs from the preservatives under la and not taxed. to lev a tax will not solve the problem and as industries will still not abided as they not paying the tax just the consumer. The Governments should go back and make a sugar and salt act and ban these two items from all foods and soft drinks starting from 2017 and cafés be restricted to two sachets of white sugar for tea and brown for coffee also starting in 2017. Sugar Tax is not the cure will cause to people to carry on regardless while introduction law will have positive result and should include the removal of sugar from chocolates and sweets and just have small amount glucose instead

Governments Easing Tax And Regulation Burdens

Though I was born in the USA, I have lived abroad for 30 years, and pay taxes in New Zealand (yes, I agree, an easy tax system!). I have no assets or income from the USA, yet because I was born there, and the US has citizenship based taxation, I am told to file US tax forms every year. The USA IRS tax department estimates that a tax return for a US citizen living abroad can take up to 13 days to complete! This is expensive and a waste of time (no US taxes owing for most filers). Also US government requires an annual FBAR, or declaration of Financial accounts based abroad - including account name, number and balance. This is my LOCAL bank, just down the street. This issue affects 9 million Americans living abroad. FATCA is the compliance arm that enforces citizenship based taxation.

Governments Easing Tax And Regulation Burdens

Really? As the reality on the ground is quite different as it relates to FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) which is the enforcement tool of the US practice of Citizenship Based Taxation. This is not only affecting the 9M disenfranchised Americans living overseas but other countries citizens who are caught up in the Kafkaesque US tax system (e.g. Accidental Americans). I highly encourage you to do further research as the reality on the ground is quite different than what you wrote in this article. You can start by consulting the American Expatriates group on Facebook so you can get a better view of what is happening to the aforementioned populations:
