New Jersey Tries To Legalize Online Sportsbetting,

New Jersey governor Jon Corzine is expected to join with New Jersey State Senator Ray Lesniak in a lawsuit claiming that the 1992 federal sports betting ban is unconstitutional and violates states' rights. Sports betting only recently came on the agenda for legalized gambling, since Delaware decided to reintroduce it on three of its racecourses against the stiff opposition of the National Football League. A constitutional clash may be necessary in order to overturn the federal betting ban.
The Professional Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), passed in 1992, exempted Nevada, Oregon, Montana and Delaware, the only four states that had existing sports betting laws when the act became law. In March, Governor Jack Markell of Delaware proposed bringing back sports betting after 30 years to help raise tax revenue and the bill was approved in May.
New Jersey Governor Corzine expects the state could earn an extra USD100m from the its 8% tax on gaming. Atlantic City, New Jersey once held a unique position on the US East Coast as a casino centre. Nowadays nearly every state along the eastern seaboard has some kind of gaming, from slot machines at racetracks to land-based casinos. Now Delaware has brought back sports betting, there is one less reason for tourists and gamblers to visit Atlantic City.
