According to reports, sources close to the Yukos investigation have revealed that the embattled oil firm has been saddled with another massive tax bill by the Russian authorities, this time said to be in the region of US$5.7 billion.
Added to the billions of dollars that the embattled oil company already owes in back tax and fines, it means the firm’s total bill could soon be approaching $14 billion.
Citing a source close to the Putin administration, Kommersant reported last week that a probe into the firm’s tax affairs for 2002 found unpaid taxes of some 160 billion roubles ($5.5 billion). It was also reported by Vedmosti that the 2002 claim is close to being served, and it would amount to a figure "comparable" to previous years’ outstanding tax bills.
The growing tax bill means the firm’s main production unit Yuganskneftegaz is likely to be sold off in order for the escalating tax bill to be met.
