Troubled Russian oil firm, Yukos has been hit with another massive demand for under-paid taxes, it emerged last week.
Following a Tax Ministry claim, upheld in court on Wednesday, that the firm owes around 99 billion roubles for 2000, the Ministry announced on Thursday that it was also seeking 98 billion roubles for unpaid tax in 2001.
The firm was given five business days to pay the earlier tax liability, and has reportedly offered up its stake in former partner and current competitor, Sibneft as payment.
Some observers had suggested prior to the issuing of the second demand that following an announcement by President Putin last month to the effect that the Russian authorities were "not interested in the bankruptcy of such a company as Yukos", government intervention to prevent the firm from going bankrupt might have been on the cards.
However, in light of this week's events, this now appears unlikely.
