It emerged last week that work has been completed on a scheme to provide new moorings and upgrade the amenity area at Kilglass, on the Shannon Navigation.
The moorings are located on Kilglass Lake, in Co Roscommon. Waterways Ireland took over responsibility for the management and maintenance of the Kilglass Moorings at the end of 2006.
During the upgrade works, the old fixed wooden jetties were replaced with new floating jetties which can accommodate up to 10 boats. In addition, a floating breakwater was installed to provide added protection to moored boats from the prevailing winds across Kilglass Lake. A six metre wide modern slipway was also constructed as part of the works.
The amenity area was also enhanced.
The total cost of the project was approximately EUR380,000.
Waterways Ireland has a programme of ongoing investment in upgrading and developing facilities on the Shannon Navigation. The Shannon Navigation, which includes the River Shannon and its lakes, is navigable over a distance of 215 km from Lough Allen, Co Leitrim to the sea at Limerick.
Waterways Ireland is the North/South Implementation Body responsible for managing, maintaining, developing and restoring the inland navigable waterways throughout the island.
