It has emerged that the Committee on Regional Trade Agreements (CRTA) of the World Trade Organization is to examine the Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) at its meeting in Geneva, which commences today.
Under WTO requirements, the organization has to be notified of all free trade agreements, which are then subjected to the examination of WTO members to ensure that the agreements are consistent with world trade rules.
At the two-day Geneva meeting, the CRTA will examine a number of free trade agreements, including CEPA.
Representatives of the governments of both China and Hong Kong will take part and the delegation will be led by the Deputy Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology, Mr Philip Yung.
Officials from the Commerce and Industry Branch of the Commerce, Industry and Technology Bureau; Trade and Industry Department; the Department of Justice; and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Geneva will also participate in the meeting.
