World famous author of the Harry Potter series of books Joanne Rowling has won her case against a 'typosquatter' before the domain name dispute resolution service of the World Intellectual Property Organisation, it emerged last week.
The author is better known as JK Rowling, and took issue when she learned that Uruguay-resident Alvaro Collazo had registered the domain names 'www-jkrowling.com' and 'kjrowling.com' in an attempt to take advantage of misspelt attempts to locate her official website.
Although both domain names appeared merely to be 'parked' with the registrar by Collazo, visitors to the sites reportedly faced a barrage of pop-up advertisements unrelated to the Dot.Registrar.com service.
The administrative panel of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center on Thursday agreed with the Harry Potter author's claims that the domain names were 'confusingly similar' to her own, and were registered and used in bad faith by Collazo, who has previously typosquatted companies such as Expedia and the Bank of America.
With this in mind, the panel ruled that the domain names be transferred to JK Rowling.
