Vonage Infringed Verizon Patents, Court Finds,

Ruling on Thursday, jurors at the US District Court for the Virginia Eastern
District stated that VoIP service provider Vonage Holdings had infringed three
US patents held by Verizon.
Verizon filed suit against Vonage last summer, alleging several instances of
patent infringement with regard to internet telephony technology.
Vonage was ordered to pay $58m, and royalties of 5.5% of future sales, but
is reportedly disputing the validity of the patents in question.
Commenting on the verdict last week, John Thorne, Verizon senior vice president
and deputy general counsel stated that:
"A jury today found that Vonage Holdings Corp. has infringed three United
States patents awarded to Verizon covering methods of offering commercial-quality
VoIP services, including wireless access to VoIP."
"Patents encourage and protect innovations that benefit consumers, create
jobs and keep the economy growing. Verizon's innovations are central to its
strategy of building the best communications networks in the world."
"We are proud of our inventors and pleased the jury stood up for the legal
protections they deserve."
The verdict is not expected to affect the service received by Vonage customers.
