Thirteen UK telecommunications firms and internet service providers (ISPs) last week announced the launch of an industry group for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers.
The Internet Telephony Service Providers Association (ITSPA) was founded to act as the voice of the rapidly growing internet telephony industry in discussions with UK and European regulators.
Speaking to the Out-Law news service last week, ITSPA spokesman Kim Thesiger revealed that the new industry body will focus on fostering continuing innovation and development in internet telephony through the promotion of self-regulation and competition, explaining that:
"Internet telephony providers now offer a serious alternative to the existing telephone companies, and we need to look at the levels of regulation and encouragement that this industry needs."
The thirteen founding members of the ISPTA are: Call UK, ET Phones, Gossiptel, Gradwell, Idesk, Imass, Intervivo, Magrathea, Mistral Internet, Speak2World, Telappliant, Telco Global, T-Strategy.
