Russian mobile telecommunications firm Vimpelcom announced that it has received a final decision on the amount of tax the firm owes for the 2002 tax year.
According to a statement by Vimpelcom on Friday, tax inspectors have calculated in their final reckoning that the firm now owes an additional RUB344.9 million (US$12.4 million) in back taxes, as well as RUB129.1 million (US$4.7 million) in fines and penalties for 2002 – an amount slightly lower than the RUB580.6 million (US$20.9 million) in back tax, fines and penalties initially demanded by the tax inspectorate.
A significant portion of the tax claim, exclusive of fines and penalties, is the result of the authorities claiming that value added tax offsets were made incorrectly, the firm revealed.
Despite disagreeing with the tax inspectorate's verdict, Vimpelcom has agreed to pay the tax claim, although the firm stated that it is considering an appeal against some or all of the amount.
