Van Investable Index Outperforms Hedge Fund Benchmarks

After completing its first eight months at the end of December 2004, Van Hedge Fund Advisors International has announced that the Van International Investable Index has posted the best returns among the investable hedge fund indices.

According to Van, the Investable Index returned 4.3% between May 1 and December 31, 2004, outperforming several other investable indices over the same period, including the CSFB/Tremont Index, which gained 3.58%, The S&P Hedge Fund Index (2.57%), the MSCI Investable Index (2.14%), the HFRX Global Hedge Fund Index (2.11%) and the FTSE Hedge fund Index (0.47%).

“We are very pleased with the performance of the VI since its inception”, Dan Hayden, Managing Director and Product Manager stated.

“The VI has delivered on its promise to track the returns of the broader hedge fund universe as measured by its benchmark, the Van International Hedge Fund Index,” he added.

The investable index is designed to provide investors with the opportunity to replicate the performance of the broad hedge fund universe by tracking the Van International Hedge Fund Index.

The index began with a value of 1,000 in January 1988 and as of December 31, 2004, had climbed to a value of 9,595.00. Over its 17-year history, the Van Index has generated a net compound annualized return of 14.20%.

“We are very excited about the VI,” remarked Tom Whelan, President and CEO of Van.

“The Investable Index has produced a return similar to its benchmark with only a small degree of tracking error. The realized returns since inception compare favourably to, and exceed in most cases, those of other investable indices in the marketplace,” he added.
