The Van Global Hedge Fund Index gained 1.2% last month, Van Hedge Fund Advisors International announced last week.
The hedge fund advisory firm noted that the return figures are preliminary, and are based on an initial sample of 325 hedge funds in the United States and offshore. More comprehensive July figures will be forthcoming soon.
Speaking on Thursday, chairman George Van announced that: 'Hedge funds continue to post appreciable gains this year. Through July, the Index has risen 9.3% net, putting it on pace to claim its best year since 1999.'
According to Van, short selling fared worst amongst a handful of losing strategies in July, primarily as a result of the stock market rebound.
