Internet retailer, Amazon.com is reportedly set to choose between Luxembourg and the Republic of Ireland as the location for its new European base.
According to reports in the Irish media, Amazon executives have recently toured internet data centres in Dublin, and the firm is believed to be considering the establishment of a separate site in Cork.
However, the Irish Independent revealed on Monday that the company's final decision is thought to hinge on the issue of VAT rates, an area in which Ireland is at a disadvantage compared to Luxembourg.
Currently, Ireland's 21% standard VAT rate is one of the highest in the European Union, whilst Luxembourg's 15% rate is one of the lowest.
The two sites that Amazon hopes to establish as the base for its European customer support and administration activities would be a boon to either jurisdiction, creating around 200 new jobs.
