The Uruguay Minister of Economy and Finance, Álvaro García, has signed an accord for the exchange of information on tax matters with France during a Paris visit which included meetings with the OECD.
Garcia was participating in the launch of an OECD initiative to establish a regional forum for dialogue on fiscal policy for Latin America and the Caribbean.
In a recent interview with Radio Carve Montevideo, Garcia said three important tax accords had been signed with with Spain, Portugal and Mexico, another renegotiated with Germany, while negotiations with South Korea had been finalized. The accords included exchange of tax information with those countries to satisfy OECD requirements for removal from their list of unco-operative countries.
Garcia also said that Uruguay would review the validity of laws that protect bank secrecy in Uruguay. "In this new international situation, when contexts change, we must adapt," he added.
