A bill updating the UK's patent laws in order to provide a "more supportive framework" for SMEs was published on Friday, it has emerged.
Announcing the bill, science and innovation minister, Lord Sainsbury explained that:
"The government is committed to improving the environment necessary to support and encourage innovation." He continued:
"Effective, flexible and up-to-date patent law is essential to help businesses turn bright ideas into successful products and processes."
The bill contains measures which allow the UK Patent Office to provide independent opinions on patent validity in order to settle disputes more efficiently, and additionally aims to reduce bureaucracy and make it easier for UK firms to operate across the EU, thus bringing UK patent law into line with the revised European Patent Convention.
