Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko has vetoed a law imposing temporary import duties on a list of 'non-critical' products.
The law, which aims to increase the government's revenues in view of the ongoing global financial crisis, would have put in place a temporary 13% tax on a number of imports, except those on a list drawn up by the cabinet.
The proposals were subject to the final approval of the President following adoption by parliament last month. However, Yushchenko argued that the temporary extra charges on imports were not consistent with the constitution of Ukraine, and in their current state would breach both World Trade Organisation and IMF rules. .
