Following parliamentary approval, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has signed a bill approving proposals to increase excise taxes on tobacco. When the legislation enters into effect it will increase taxation on cigarettes twofold.
Excise taxes in Ukraine are to increase from May 1, 2009 as follows:
Non-filter cigarettes will be subject to a levy of UAH50 (USD6.2) per 1,000 up from UAH25, while filtered cigarettes will be subject to a UAH100 (USD12.5) levy per 1,000, up from UAH47.
The minimum excise rate per pack of 20 non-filter cigarettes will therefore grow from UAH0.50 to UAH1 and of 20 filtered cigarettes from UAH0.94 to UAH2.
The increase in tobacco tax marks the second this year, following the Ukrainian Parliament’s adoption of a 25% increased duty on filtered cigarettes and 24.8% on non-filtered cigarettes in February.
