Ukrainian Vice-Prime Minister for European and International Integration Hryhoriy Nemyria noted the opening of negotiations into the possibility of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Ukraine and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) in a statement on April 20.
“The beginning of negotiations marks a significant step on the way towards Ukraine’s European integration and creates conditions for the deepening of economic cooperation with European countries,” Hryhoriy Nemyria underlined, adding: “For Ukraine, enhancing ties with Europe is a crucial part of the Government’s policy, to further enhance the competitiveness of the Ukrainian economy.”
Nemyria explained that the launch of the talks is a logical step following Ukraine’s accession to the World Trade Organization and the launch of negotiations on creating an overall free trade zone between Ukraine and the EU. An additional free trade agreement with EFTA would mean that barriers to trade with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland would be reduced, enabling Ukraine to compete more efficiently on the European stage.
Deputy Secretary-General of EFTA Dider Chambovey who also attended the meeting said: “The conclusion of a free trade agreement between Ukraine and the European Free Trade Association will not only stimulate the development of trade relations but will be profitable for our citizens and facilitate increased prosperity the respective countries.”
