The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), the Ethiopian Revenues and Customs Authority (ERCA), and the World Customs Organization (WCO) have signed a cooperation agreement, aimed at improving revenue services.
During the signing of the agreement in Kampala, Allen Kagina, the URA’s Commissioner General, said that, with the help of the WCO, the cooperation agreement is expected to generate a structure for sharing information and improving services in revenue collection. She said that revenue authorities across the world are now collaborating to make it easier for taxpayers to fulfill their tax obligations.
Also at the signing, Lars Karlsson, the WCO’s Director of Capacity Building, commended the URA’s modernization efforts. He believed that the WCO now wanted to use its knowledge to help others, and added that the agreement would stimulate Ethiopia’s revenue services.
Johannes Meles, the ERCA’s Director for Planning and Research signed on behalf of Ethiopia. She said that the recently-established African Tax Administrators Forum (ATAF) has been formed to assist revenue authorities in Africa. The first meeting of the ATAF is expected to be in Uganda in November this year, and should help to offer better revenue services and improve trade in the region.
