Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos met with US Special Envoy to Cyprus Thomas Weston last Friday, where the American assured the president that the United States would bring pressure to bear on the Turkish Cypriot side to try and bump start settlement talks once again.
However, the President explained that whilst Weston had divulged his views on the Cyprus/Turkey situation, he did not put forward any alternatives to the plan negotiated by UN Secretary General Koffi Annan some weeks ago and rejected by Turkish leader Rauf Denktash.
Papadopoulos described the meeting with the US envoy as “extremely friendly, sincere and useful”. “The US has a special interest in a settlement on the island. It remains very actively involved and has assured me that pressure will be exerted on the Turkish Cypriot side,” confirmed the President, adding: “I repeated the National Council’s firm position that we are ready at any moment to resume talks when we are invited to do so by the Secretary-general.”
