Proposals put forward by US Senators Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Patrick Leahy (D-Vt) which would allow the Department of Justice to bring civil, rather than criminal lawsuits against file sharers have been welcomed by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
In a statement praising the bill, RIAA chairman, Mitch Bainwol observed that:
"This legislation provides federal prosecutors with the flexibility and discretion to bring copyright infringement cases that best correspond to the nature of the crime."
The unveiling of the bill follows the recent launch by the RIAA and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of an anti-piracy seal for copyrighted music warning on the illegality of peer-to-peer file sharing.
