The Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) and ranking Democrat Max Baucus (D-Montana, pictured), have formally requested that the Government Accountability Office investigate the Internal Revenue Service’s Offers in Compromise program.
According to Dow Jones Newswires, the two senators sent their request to the government watchdog after releasing a letter from IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson written in response to questions raised with Treasury Secretary John Snow concerning the implementation and administration of the OIC program.
Defending the IRS’s running of the OIC scheme, which allows tax debtors to make a deal with the Revenue and settle tax disputes earlier, Everson stated that several steps have been taken towards improving the service.
"I believe we have made significant progress in improving the OIC program over the past several years and will continue to seek ways to make further improvements," Everson wrote.
