It emerged this week that the US authorities have made their first arrest for spam sent via an instant messenger service, or 'spim'.
According to reports in the US media, New York resident Anthony Greco was arrested in Los Angeles following a spim onslaught against members of the MySpace.com community.
The US teenager had threatened to publicise the methods that he used to spam members of the service if MySpace did not sign a marketing deal with him, and it was under the pretence that he would be meeting with the MySpace management to sign this deal that Greco was lured to LA, and subsequently arrested.
Speaking to News.com, Assistant US Attorney, Brian Hoffstadt confirmed that the arrest was the first criminal case to be brought against an individual for spamming via an IM service, but warned that:
"We're just beginning to get the tip of the iceberg. This could be a new wave as online communities start up."
