The US Justice Department has secured what it says are the first two convictions for online file sharing activity.
According to reports in the national media this week, New York resident William Trowbridge and Texas resident Michael Chicoine on Tuesday pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit felony copyright infringement, in addition to admitting to acting for commercial advantage.
The Department of Justice revealed that between 2002 and 2004, the two men "owned, maintained, operated and moderated" hubs for a file sharing network known as the "Underground Network".
Following the seizure by the FBI of computers, software and equipment from their residences under the auspices of Operation Digital Gridlock, Trowbridge and Chicoine now reportedly face up to five years in prison, and a $250,000 fine. The Associated Press revealed that sentencing is set to take place on April 29.
