Teleglobe, a US-based provider of global communications and e-business services, announced on Monday the opening of a regional office in Hong Kong and the appointment of Andrew Kwok as its vice president of the Asia Pacific region.

Teleglobe delivers hosting services, content distribution and global connectivity to its customers. With a maximum capacity of 10 million+ Gbps-miles, 60 major POPs and 600,000 square feet of hosting facilities, Teleglobe serves a broad base of enterprise, Internet content provider (ICP), Internet service provider (ISP), application service provider (ASP) and carrier customers. Teleglobe is expanding its network with its GlobeSystem initiative, a multi-billion dollar IP network and hosting deployment which, says the company, 'will increase current capacity 200-fold and provide a robust platform for a portfolio of Internet and data services.'

A recent Ovum study forecast strong growth throughout the Asia Pacific region during the next five years with total bandwidth revenues increasing from US$2.68bn this year to more than US16bn by 2005. Marc Bouchard of Teleglobe commented: 'The projected growth in Internet traffic volumes and demand for broadband access, combined with liberalization and privatization, make the Asian region a highly attractive and dynamic marketplace.'

He continued: 'Our new Hong Kong regional office staff, under Andrew (Kwong's) leadership, will serve some of the world's most highly developed and most rapidly developing countries. We will identify and explore potential partnerships and business opportunities as well as bring many customer support functions closer to our in-country sales teams and regional customers.'
