Worldport Communications Inc, the US Internet hosting giant which last year chose Dublin as the location for a new web hosting SuperCentre and European headquarters, is to dramatically expand the Irish facility in order to meet capacity requirements.

Worldport announced last month that it will create nearly 100 new jobs in the next year in Dublin.

The company has spent over US$100m on its 125,000 sq ft facility in Blanchardstown since opening there in October of last year. Worldport currently has 104 employees and plans to increase the number to about 200 by the end of 2001.

Worldport's President and chief operating officer, Jim Martin, was reported in the Irish press as saying: 'We are here for the long-term and we have discussed our strategy with the Taoiseach as to our growth plans for Worldport in Ireland. Ultimately we aim to be the premium provider of pan-European managed Web-hosting solutions through a number of acquisitions and strategic partnerships'.

Worldport is just one in a line of companies that have found Ireland an attractive location in which to operate a European headquarters. Mr Martin said: 'Worldport's arrival in the Irish market was stimulated by a number of factors, including attractive government e-business initiatives, as well as a highly skilled workforce. Dublin's Media Lab is an initiative which we believe is at the forefront of the IT sector, and we look forward to exploring opportunities with the development'.

The Irish government has been at the forefront of an effort to attract foreign investment, particularly in the Internet and e-commerce arena. The Department of Public Enterprise has established industry partnerships enabling Ireland to secure further infrastructure to yield greater Internet access speeds and connectivity.
