US Internet Hosting Firm Opens Franchise In Costa Rica

Mike Godfrey, Tax-news.com, New York

27 February 2001

Synapse Gobal Corporation, an Oregon, US-based company offering Internet hosting, co-location and e-commerce services, recently entered into an alliance with Costa Rican firm Sinapsis Global, to provide website hosting and other Internet services at a lower cost than the Central American country's market average.

The alliance is a franchise arrangement and is headed by Max Esquivel, who said the company's pricing would be extremely competitive. Its basic hosting service costs as little as $19 a month but Mr Esquivel says that the real selling point for the new service is that it is US-based, so the scope for problems will be less (Costa Rica is renowned for its Internet connectivity glitches). The local office has been set up principally to give Costa Rican clients easy access to technical support for US-hosted sites. Bills for services can also be paid locally.

Scott Wittenberg of Synapse Global Corporation said in the Costa Rican press last week: 'Our goal is to become a one-stop shop for any customer by offering hosting, e-commerce, database management, audio/video and other services. By now, most businesses have realized that to succeed, they must have an Internet presence'. Mr Wittenberg added that Costa Rica was chosen as the venue for Synapse's first foray abroad because of its stability and telecommunications infrastructure.
