The United States Justice Department on Tuesday announced that it intends to shut down double the number of illegal tax shelter promoters this year compared to last year.
Last year, the US tax authorities blocked 28 firms from selling what amounted to illegal tax shelters, and the government is expecting to shut down around 56 in 2004.
The IRS and the Justice Department have been keen to stress this week that they are beginning to turn the corner on tax enforcement, especially after recent bad publicity on the Revenue's lax procedures in its criminal division, and the latest figures are a significant improvement on the year 2000 when no firms were made to stop selling illegal tax shelters.
"One of the obligations of government officials is not only to enforce the laws but also to reassure people, to help maintain their faith in the institutions of government, that the laws are in fact being enforced," noted Eileen J. O'Connor, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's tax division.
