Several users of Inuit’s popular TurboTax software inadvertently paid a portion of their 2004 tax liability whilst filing their tax return for 2003 income, reports stated this week.
According to the firm, around 400 taxpayers using the firms e-filing interface mistakenly clicked ‘yes’ to a prompt that asked if they wished for a prepayment to be deducted against their estimated 2004 tax bill.
The company has admitted that this particular process was somewhat confusing for taxpayers and that the software did not make it easy for users to correct mistakes. However, a spokesman indicated that the program has since been updated and that users will be entitled to a refund if they did not intend to prepay 2004 taxes.
TurboTax is used by around 10 million US taxpayers for the preparation and filing of income tax returns.
