US company Hughes Network Systems (HNS), a provider of wireless broadband solutions for businesses and consumers which is part of Hughes Electronics Corporation, announced last week that it has made a significant investment in ChinaCast Technology (BVI) Ltd (CCT), a Hong Kong-based provider of broadband Internet infrastructure in China.

CCT, which was founded only last year, has headquarters in Beijing and Hong Kong. ChinaCast Technology is working closely with ChinaCast Co (CCC), its management and technology partner, to offer the Turbo163 service in China, which is China's first nationwide satellite-based broadband Internet service. Launched in July, Turbo163 is based on HNS' DirecPC(R) technology that enables users to access the Internet at a high-speed downstream data rate of 400 Kbps and to receive broadcast data at a rate of 3 Mbps. With this deal, CCL will be able to offer a variety of advanced broadband services to both the enterprise and consumer markets.

Pradman Kaul, chairman and CEO of HNS, said of the investment: 'We are pleased to provide support to CCT, with whom we have had a long standing relationship. HNS is committed to the widespread rollout of the DirecPC platform and we believe ChinaCast is well positioned to deploy the proven DirecPC broadband service throughout China. We believe that DirecPC, with its ability to provide instant and ubiquitous coverage, will greatly aid in the development of broadband services throughout the world.'

Ron Chan, CEO of CCT, commented: 'This investment by HNS represents a commitment to the ongoing evolution of Internet and broadband services in main land China. Broadband is the channel for high performance Internet services and with DirecPC, we plan to become a major force in the China market.'
