One of America's most influential business groups, the National Association of Manufacturers, has lobbied lawmakers in the US to bring forward planned cuts on income and company taxes in a bid to prevent the economy from sliding into a recession after the September 11 terrorist attacks. The tax cuts were part of the $1.3 trillion tax cut package presented earlier this year, but they are not due to go into effect for over two years.
The Association's President, Jerry Jasinowski, said: 'Now millions of American businesses find themselves struggling to keep their doors open and their workers employed. We urge the Bush administration and the Congress to act quickly on tax measures that will raise business and consumer income with modest impact on the overall federal budget.'
Congressional leaders are currently debating the best way forward with tax cuts and increases in spending that would help revive the economy.
