US tax preparation firm H & R Block, which is a leading member of the Free File Alliance, offering free Internet tax return filing to poorer Americans in association with the IRS, has run into trouble over TV ads which appear to knock CPA firms.
The American Institute of CPAs says it's 'appalled and offended' by the commercials and is demanding that the campaign be pulled.
The TV spots show a seemingly confused taxpayer searching for a tax preparer while walking down dark streets filled with neon CPA signs until he arrives at the bright, welcoming H & R Block offices.
AICPA president Barry Melancon wrote to Block's CEO Mark Ernst, saying he found the ad "disparaging to the CPA profession and to tens of thousands of our members."
"Our ads promote the benefit of H&R Block and don’t single out CPAs in any way," said a Block spokesperson. "We have no problem with CPAs and their profession and we will continue to run the ads, which we feel have been generally well received."
To market its Internet tax filing service, H & R Block has teamed up for the fourth year running with Microsoft which offers tax preparation along with other financial products through its MSN Tax Center.
