US Trade Representative, Susan C. Schwab announced last week that:
"I am pleased that the President has issued a proclamation to implement the US-Bahrain FTA as of August 1, 2006."
"We have worked closely and intensively with the Government of Bahrain to ensure that the obligations and responsibilities of each party under the agreement have been met."
The Free Trade Agreement with Bahrain was signed into law in January.
Under the terms of the agreement, the Gulf state must remove tariffs on US consumer and industrial products, and the majority of agricultural goods. In return, the United States will remove its own tariffs on goods from Bahrain.
Bahrain must additionally increase IP protections, and open up its financial services sector to US banks.
