The most senior intellectual property judge in the UK, Mr Justice Jacob has slammed law firms for 'padding' billing for IP cases by putting too many solictors on any given job.
'Time and time again you see short applications with four or five people in court. Solicitors should put fewer people on cases,' he told Managing Intellectual Property magazine.
The senior IP judge also attacked the industry's hourly billing system, arguing that it rewards slow workers to the detriment of their clients.
Speaking to the Legal Week news service last week, Bird & Bird partner, Trevor Cook admitted that: 'There is a degree of truth in the criticism.' However, he added:
'Because the judiciary come from the Bar they have no idea of the consequences of the requirements they place on solicitors.'
