The new selection system for QCs has failed to increase diversity within the profession, although the number of women applying for silk has increased.
According to reports in the UK legal media, the number of non-white candidates fell from 6% last year to 5% of the total number this year.
However, applications from women increased from 10% to 15%.
The updated system also failed to attract more solicitors to apply.
Speaking to the Legal Week news service, however, Mark Clough, chairman of the Solicitors Association of Higher Court Advocates observed that:
"I don't think it shows a lack of trust in the new process, but a realistic approach and great modesty of the part of the profession. I anticipate the number of solicitors applying will go up, but some may need a bit more encouragement."
