UK's New Legal Services Ombudsman Outlines Brief

by Robin Pilgrim, LawAndTax-News.com

06 March 2003

Speaking as she took office this week, newly appointed Legal Services Ombudsman for England and Wales, Zahida Manzoor outlined her plans for the future.

Revealing that the number of cases referred to her office from members of the public unhappy with the way that their complaints have been dealt with is continuing to rise, Ms Manzoor announced that:

'Not only is this unacceptable but it may only be the tip of the iceberg. It is highly likely that these cases only reflect those people who are aware of their rights and have the perseverance to pursue their complaints.'

'There may be many more people who are unhappy at the level of service they have received from the legal profession but are unaware of their rights to get redress.'

She went on to add, according to the Lawzone news service:

'I see my role as threefold: to ensure that individual complaints are handled properly; to act as a public watchdog on the standards of complaint handling by the professional bodies; and to raise standards generally throughout the legal professions.'
