UK's DTI Consults On Changes To Distance Selling Regulations

by Robin Pilgrim, LawAndTax-News.com, London

26 January 2004

The UK's Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) revealed last week that it has launched a consultation into the country's Distance Selling Regulations, in parallel with the European Commission's review of the implementation of the Distance Selling Directive within the EU.

In the recently released consultation document, entitled 'Changes to the Distance Selling Regulations', three proposed amendments to the current rules are laid out. These are to:

  • Make traders responsible for informing customers at the time of sale if the goods or services are exempt from the standard seven day 'cooling off' period;
  • Look at cutting the cost to businesses of informing customers of their rights to cancel;
  • Give consumers the right to cancel by telephone a contract made by mail order, over the internet, or by fax or digital television.

Comment on the planned changes is invited for a three month period.
