Ministers in the UK are getting set to detail a new proposal which will see all migrants from outside the EU subject to a visa tax.
The fee, which will be levied in addition to existing visa fees, is designed to 'make people pay for their stay'. It has also been revealed that citizenship may be fast-tracked for those willing to take part in voluntary work schemes.
It is thought that the visa levy, due for introduction in April, will be around GBP50 (USD70) per individual, and will generate around GBP70m (USD98m) for government coffers by 2011. The intention is to plough these revenues back into the schools, hospitals and other public services that are affected by high rates of migration.
