UK Taxpayers Have Mixed Feelings About Online Filing

by Robert Lee, Tax-News.com, London

31 January 2003

A recent survey conducted by firewall vendor Check Point Software Technologies, found that many UK taxpayers are wary of filing their tax returns online, with security cited as the main concern.

Reporting on the results of the study, The Register news service revealed that of the 200 people polled by Check Point, just 7% planned to take advantage of the Inland Revenue's e-filing system.

For the 93% who stated a preference for traditional paper returns, concerns about security, unreliable internet connections, and difficulties with the Government Gateway online registration all played a part in their decision. Around 5% of those questioned gave the lack of an internet connection at home as their reason.

However, despite gloomy predictions that this year's figures for self-assessment returns would mirror last year's disappointing 75,449 (which represents less than 1% of the population), the Inland Revenue announced on Thursday that more than 250,000 returns had been filed electronically in the run-up to today's deadline.

'We are very happy with the results,' a Revenue spokesman announced, revealing that - so far at least - security breaches and system failures have been conspicuous by their absence.
