Speaking on Tuesday at an evidence session on the UK government's Constitutional Reform Bill, Lord Chancellor, Lord Falconer revealed that the Supreme Court proposed in the Bill is likely to cost in the region of £7 million per year to run.
Lord Falconer told the Commons Constitutional Affairs Committee that the massive increase in funding necessary to sustain such a body (as the current system of retaining Law Lords within the upper house costs just £600,000) could be secured by raising the cost of a civil fee by between 20 and 50 pence.
He went on to add, according to reports, that:
"It (the creation of the Supreme Court) is a very important thing to do and it is the right thing to do."
