According to a report in the UK's Telegraph last week, a scrap between the European Union and China over the latter's alleged 'shoe dumping' may soon follow the recent trade war over Chinese textile imports to the EU.
The EC has launched an investigation into allegations by Italian shoe manufacturers that their Chinese counterparts have been selling shoes at below the cost of production.
However, a group of UK retailers including representatives from Clarks, New Look and Next flew to Brussels last week to beg the Commission not to impose additional duties on Chinese shoes, as this would increase costs for consumers.
"This is protectionism at its worst, and businesses and consumers will pay," Martin Salisbury from Clarks told the Telegraph.
