It was announced earlier this month that the UK Ship Register showed increases both in ship numbers and tonnage for the financial year 2006-07.
In particular, 23 ships joined the Register during February and March 2007, nine of which were new builds, whilst the remainder had transferred from other Flag States.
The new registrations over the two month period represented a wide range of ship types, including six container ships; three chemical tankers; six general cargo; two bulk carriers and six vessels of other types.
The UK Ship Register has therefore achieved a net increase of 1.2 million GT and 34 vessels for the financial year 2006/07. This brings the current number of merchant vessels on the Register to 1,459 with a combined gross tonnage of 13,011,902 GT.
This is the first time in recent years that the UK Ship Register has exceeded 13 million GT.
According to the figures, the average age of the UK fleet is going down, and the majority of the vessels coming onto the UK Ship Register are either new builds or younger tonnage.
