According to figures released by the UK Patent Office on Tuesday, the number of registered trademarks granted for brand names in the UK in 2004 showed a substantial increase on the previous year's figures.
The Office revealed that trademark registrations were up more than 2,500 to 49,913 in 2004 (from 47,332 in 2003).
The 10 companies found to have registered the most trademarks in 2004 were: Glaxo Group Ltd (150), Unilever plc (93), Bristol Myers Squibb Company (88), Imperial Chemical Industries plc (78), Johnson & Johnson (65), National Lottery Commission (62), British Telecommunications plc (60), Reckitt Benckiser UK Ltd (44), Pfizer Products (43), and Western Wines Ltd (42).
