The UK on Thursday passed legislation updating the 1977 Patents Act, it has emerged.
The government explained that the changes are intended to create "a more supportive framework" to foster innovation and help small businesses protect their patent rights.
The new Patent Act reportedly contains new protections for those accused of infringements, in addition to measures to encourage the out-of-court settlement of disputes.
However, it does not attempt to change the criteria for the patentability of a product or service.
