At the first day of the Overseas Territories Consultative Council meeting in London this week, Bermuda Premier Jennifer Smith asked the UK to consider substantial constitutional changes to abolish twin seat constituencies and reduce the number of Bermuda MPs to less than 20. The issue was also raised at the recent meeting of the Commonwealth Finance Ministers.
In a move to give Bermuda and the other overseas territories more power over their own affairs, it is believed that the UK has given permission for the territories to form their own constitutional committees and open an ongoing dialogue with the UK concerning constitutional change.
